Alcantara Golf Development (Sicily)

This is a development of 18 holes over 6600 yards Par 72. The site is located in a valley in the Taormina district of Sicily. The land was previously used for growing a variety of fruit trees: oranges, lemons, figs etc. The top of Mount Etna is visible from some parts of the site. The course is scheduled to be open in 2012. The following photographs show the site before development started. Choose the following links to see the progress as the holes develop:

There are a number of constraints on the site which affect the design. A main gas pipe crosses the site which restricts the excavations some 13.5 metres either side of the pipe, an old landfill site covers approximately a sixth of the area available and again no excavation is possible, small irrigation canals (canalette) traverse the site but these are elevated and therefore pose a problem for integrating into the golf holes and the shape of the land with a large house located near one boundary all make for a challenging design.
